Who is Orange Socks?

A lot of people who look into John/Jane Doe cases know of the Jane Doe from Georgetown, Texas nicknamed “Orange Socks”. She was nicknamed Orange Socks because the only piece of clothing she was had on when she was discovered was simply a pair of orange socks.

She was discovered on October 31st, 1979 off of Interstate 35. She had been strangled and sexually assaulted. She had brown hair with a reddish tint, had hazel eyes, and is thought to be between the ages of 15-30 years old.

There’s a theory out there that Orange Socks was a transient. That’s because her legs were unshaven with many insect bites on them. She also had very long toenails. She was missing two of her teeth and while her teeth were well maintained, they did not show any signs of dental care, such as fillings or crowns. A towel was found at the crime scene and it seems very likely that she was using it to control her menstruation without the use of pads or tampons. She also had a matchbook with her that was from a hotel in Henryetta, Oklahoma. That fact supports the theory that she was a drifter or a hitchhiker.

In 1982, serial killer Henry Lee Lucas confessed to killing the Doe. He said that he had picked her up in Oklahoma, where they had sex. He said that afterwards he killed her and dumped her body. Many people do not believe Lucas’s confession as he was known for confessing to crimes he did not commit. He was given the death penalty for her murder and later recanted his confession in 1984. Henry Lee Lucas died of heart failure while in prison on March 12, 2001.

Even now, almost forty years later, we do not know the actual identity of Orange Socks or the person who murdered her. As of April 2019, she is going through sequencing with DNA Doe Project. Hopefully, they can identify her and give her remains back to her family.
